A first-of-its-kind residential sustainability initiative turning 50 kg/day of kitchen waste into organic compost using DMS Smart Bin
· Location: Damac Hills 2 – Vardon, Dubai, UAE
· Waste Managed: 50 kg/day organic waste
· Solution: DMS Smart Bin (Fully Automatic Food Composter)
· Outcome: On-site waste diversion + compost reuse for landscaping
· Alignment: UAE Zero Landfills by 2030 + Dubai Smart City vision
Project Overview Damac Hills 2
Vardon Community has launched a pioneering sustainability program in Dubai, enabling residents to recycle kitchen waste on-site and reuse the resulting compost within the community. The initiative reduces landfill dependency and supports circular resource use—converting waste into a valuable input for greener landscapes.

The Challenge
Residential communities generate significant volumes of daily food waste, typically routed to landfill. This results in:
· Higher waste collection and disposal loads
· Increased landfill reliance and emissions impact
· Missed opportunity to reuse organic nutrients locally
· Need for an on-site solution that is safe, hygienic, and resident-friendly (odor + noise controlled)
The Sustainability Vision
A Community-Led Sustainability Milestone This initiative—driven by the Damac Hills 2 ‘Vardon’ community members—is one of the first of its kind in Dubai. It contributes to:
· Dubai’s ambition to become a self-sustainable smart city
· The UAE Leadership’s vision of Zero Landfills by 2030
· Building a visible, measurable sustainability culture at community leve
The Solution
DMS Smart Bin Food Composter To enable on-site organic waste processing, DMS – Studio M delivered and deployed the DMS Smart Bin fully automatic food composter, designed for community environments.
Key Solution Benefits
· Fully automatic operation for simple, consistent processing
· Odor-proof design suitable for residential settings
· Sound-proof / low-noise operation for community comfort
· Hygienic and safe on-site waste management

2. On-site processing in DMS Smart Bin composter
3. Automatic composting cycle (minimal manual intervention)
4. Compost output collected and cured as required
5. Reuse in villas, gardens, and landscaped areas
Sustainability Impact (Based on 50 kg/day)
· Organic Waste Diverted 50 kg/day | ~1.5 tonnes/month | ~18 tonnes/year
· Organic Compost Produced (depends on waste mix) ~10–15 kg/day (placeholder estimate)
· Estimated CO₂ Emissions Avoided (landfill methane avoidance estimate) ~35–45 kg CO₂/day | ~12–16 tonnes/year
· Landfill Burden Reduced ~18 tonnes/year organic waste prevented from landfill stream
Actual results vary depending on waste composition, input contamination, and operating conditions. Metrics shown are estimated placeholders for reporting and can be refined using operational logs
Compost Reuse On-Site
The compost produced is reused within Damac Hills 2 for:
· Community gardens and green spaces
· Villa landscaping and soil enrichment
· Green belts, planters, and horticulture applications
Community Event & Awareness
DMS supported community engagement by presenting the solution during the Damac Hills 2 sustainability event, explaining:
· Machine features and operational guidelines
· Do’s & don’ts for best composting results
· Environmental benefits and community impact
